Voltaire Restaurant, Leuven, Belgium

Leuven is one my preferred cities in Belgium. Everytime I have a visitor from abroad I try to take him or her to visit this old university city. The Old Béguinage, some of the faculties - in the picture below you can see the old hunting pavilion, which belonged to the very noble Van Arenberg family, that for decades now has housed the Faculty of Engineering and some lecture rooms for the Department of Architecture and Urbanism -, the magnificent city hall, the Saint Peter's, and so many other attractions.

There are many eating places in and around the city. You can find all kinds of prices as this is above all a student city. And you can ask for a French-written menu without creating any civil war.

This time I was invited to have lunch at Voltaire Restaurant, in the same area of town where the Faculty of Engineering is located. It is not a cheap place, as main courses cost between 27 to 29 euros each. And the portions are not that big. But it attracts a lot of the local people, specially the business crowd and the well-off retirees. The cuisine is good quality and everything is done with speed and savoir-faire. The choice of desserts is limited but what is on offer is excellent.

For the wine, and to remain within a reasonable cost, it is better to ask for the house wine. It is not a bad choice.

Finally, this is a quiet place, notwithstanding the number of people spread out in the different rooms of the restaurant.
